Some upcoming Conferences and other events

UPCOMING (reverse chronological order)

• In '99, molecular computing was listed as a topic, so surely the Eleventh ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (SODA) will welcome this research too. Jan 9-11, 2000, San Francisco. Deadline for abstract probably in July, 1999.
• Biological computing is a topic at the 1999 Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS99), New York CIty, Oct 17-19, 1999. The deadline is April 23, 1999.
• Anyone interested in building a molecular computer will have to understand how to control and exploit thermal fluctuations (noise). Biological systems must do this all the time. Perhaps, then some DNA computing people will be interested in the 1999 Agora Meeting on Fluctuations in Biological Systems, held in Sigtuna, Sweden, August 3-7, 1999. Abstracts deadline May 1, 1999.
• There will be a track for DNA and Molecular Computing at the Genetic and Evolutionary Programming Conference in Orlando, Florida, July 14-17, 1999. Submissions deadline Jan 27, 1999.
• The journal Artificial Life will have a special issue on " THE RIGHT STUFF: Appropriate Mathematics for Evolutionary and Developmental Biology". 1 May 1999: Deadline for Submissions.
• The 1999 Congress on Evolutionary Computation lists DNA computing as a topic. Held July 6-9, Washington D.C. The submission deadline is January 29, 1999.
• The International Conference on Theory and Mathematics in Biology and Medicine will be held from Tuesday June 29 through Saturday July 3, 1999, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This is a very broad conference; research with implications for biological molecular computation may be appropriate. Submissions deadline March 1, 1999.
• The 5th International Meeting on DNA BASED COMPUTERS will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, June 14 & 15, 1999. Deadline for submissions: April 4, 1999.
• Also consider the Thirty-First Annual ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (STOC99) Atlanta, Georgia, May 1-4,1999. The deadline is past.
• The Second Workshop on Bio-Inspired Solutions to Parallel Processing Problems (BioSP3) (down under) will be held April 12-16, 1999, San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA. Paper submission deadline November 1, 1998.

• There will be a DIMACS conference "Evolution as Computation" to try to understand the effects of computation in evolution., held in Princeton, January 11-12, 1999. Submissions deadline: Dec 12, 1998.
• There are interesting calls for papers at the Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing '99, January 4-9, 1999, Hawaii. Submissions deadline July 13, 1998.
• The Second International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing and Networks (PDCN'98) will be held December 14-16, 1998, in Brisbane, Australia. Biological/molecular computing is listed within its scope. Paper submission deadline: June 1, 1998.
• The Second Asia-Pacific Conference on Simulated Evolution And Learning (SEAL'98) will be held in Canberra, Australia, 24-27 November 1998. [ in cooperation with COMPLEX SYSTEMS '98, Sydney, Australia, Nov 30 - Dec 4, 1998 ]
• The Sixth Foresight Conference on Molecular Nanotechnology will be held November 12-15, 1998 at the Westin Hotel in Santa Clara, CA.
• The New England Complex Systems Institute hosts the Second International Conference on COMPLEX SYSTEMS, Nashua, NH, October 25-30, 1998. Deadline June 2, 1998.
• The Fifth International Conference on Parallel Problem Solving from Nature (PPSN V) will be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, between September 27 - October 1, 1998. DNA computing is listed among the topics of particular interest.
• The Second International Conference on Evolvable Systems: From Biology to Hardware (ICES98) will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland, September 23-26, 1998. Submissions deadline March 15, 1998.
• A workshop on DNA computing will be organized in parallel with Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science, MFCS 98, Brno, The Czech Republic, August 24-26, 1998. The deadline is May 25, 1998 (extended abstracts). Contact address: gpaun@imar.ro (Gheorghe Paun)
• The Third Annual Genetic Programming 1998 Conference (GP-98) will be held on July 22 - 25 (Wednesday - Saturday), 1998 at University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. Submissions deadline Wednesday January 21, 1998. (Special Track on DNA Computing.)
• The Sixth International Conference on Artificial Life (Life and Computation: the Boundaries are Changing) will be held June 26th - June 29th, 1998 at UCLA in Los Angeles, USA. Len Adleman will be speaking.
• A New York Academy of Sciences Conference on Molecular Strategies in Biological Evolution will be held on June 27 - 29, 1998 at The Rockefeller University, New York City
• A section devoted to DNA computing will be organized during The First International Conference about Rough Sets and Current Trends in Computing, Warsaw, Poland, June 22-26, 1998 The deadline for submissions (extended abstracts) is February 15, 1998 (with the possibility to become March 1). • Last year, RECOMB 98 included papers on DNA computing. This year, held in New York, March 22-25, 1998. Submissions deadline, October 20, 1997.
